About the project at Stalybridge Old Police Station:

The £5.1 million redevelopment of the former Stalybridge Police Station site, saw the creation of a specialised supported living scheme, newly built to purpose. This included 24 one and two bedroom flats, with 24 hour on-site care, all commissioned by the Tameside Adult Social Care Team. These flats are available for affordable rent in consultation with the council’s housing service.

The external design of the new flats has taken great care to reflect the heritage of Stalybridge, reflecting the historic mill buildings throughout the area.

Our role in the former Stalybridge Police Station project:

We were delighted to work on this project here at Enviroply Roofing, where we were selected to install Alumasc roofing systems for both the main roof and the lower roof. We used the same materials and methods for each of the roofing systems, for high quality results. The installation began on 2nd October 2023.

The process began with the installation of a high quality Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL), designed to reduce condensation levels and prevent warm, moisture-laden air inside the building from escaping into the roof deck. This step was crucial for safeguarding the structural integrity of the roof in the long term, by protecting materials from damage caused by moisture accumulation. For this project, we installed the Alumasc Polyethylene AVCL. This is a polyester reinforced, specially modified bitumen vapour barrier with an aluminium core, and a removable polyethylene film on the underside, offering a high level of performance and longevity. This was loosely laid with the overlaps sealed with Alumasc butyl tape, in line with manufacturer’s recommendations and in preparation for mechanical fixing.

Once the vapour control layer was in place, the insulation layer was installed. Thermal insulation plays a vital role in enhancing the energy efficiency and comfort of the residential property. It works to reduce heat loss through the roof during colder months while also preventing excessive heat buildup from sunlight during warmer periods. For this project, 160mm Alumasc FF PIR Insulation boards were used. This insulation option is renowned for its exceptional thermal capabilities, making it the perfect choice for the former Stalybridge Police Station development. These rigid, square-edged boards, with composite foil facings on both sides, enhance thermal performance in any property, and are highly effective for residential developments. These were mechanically fixed into position.

The final stage of the roofing system involved installing an Alumasc Alkorplan Single Ply Membrane. This membrane provides essential weatherproofing and waterproofing for the roof. The Alkorplan, a thermoplastic PVC-P membrane, has long been established as a high performance option, and it has a proven track record of over 40 years. This offers exceptional durability, UV resistance, flexibility, and strength. This single ply membrane was mechanically fixed to complete the roofing build-up.

The result

We completed the roofing installation at the former Stalybridge Police Station on 18th March 2024. This was completed to a high standard, meeting the guarantee for 20 years, and with all parties happy with the result.
