About the project:
Kendal Town Hall and South Lakeland House saw a significant update and an extensive renovation, during which the offices were upgraded, with a new joint reception area, disability access and space for community groups. As part of this development, a new roof system was also installed with a design sympathetic to the listed status of the Town Hall building.
Our role in the development:
Our professional team, here at Enviroply Roofing, were selected to install a fully adhered, warm, Sika roofing system for Kendal Town Hall. We began the installation on 16/11/2021.
For the first stage of the installation we situated the Sarnavap 5000E self-adhesive vapour control layer (VCL) on top of the new plywood roof deck. This is a well renowned VCL with foil facing, glass-fibre mat reinforcement, and a fantastic reputation as a vapour barrier. We fully adhered this barrier membrane to the surface of the roof deck for effective coverage and protection.
Following the VCL, the insulation layer was the next stage to be completed. For this, we installed Sikatherm PIR GT insulation boards. These were installed in a staggered bond pattern, in line with the recommendations of the manufacturer. These insulation boards are faced on both sides with a coated glass tissue bonded to the insulation core for highly effective thermal protection, dramatically reducing thermal conductivity.
To continue the roofing build up, we installed the Sika Sarnafil G410-15EL single ply membrane. With a depth of 1.5 mm, this single ply option delivers highly effective weather and water protection, as well as UV protection. We secured this into position by fully adhering the membrane to the insulation layer, and hot air welding at the edges and seals to provide maximum weatherproofing and bonding.
As the roof would be completed with a green roofing system, we also installed a protection layer to keep the roof system secure. For this, we used a Sarnafil G445-13 PVC protection sheet. This is a flame retardant sheet with an inlay of glass non-woven, and impressive mechanical strength. We joined with sides and end laps with hot air welding for a secure, professional result.
On top of this protection layer, a green roofing system was installed. This was a lightweight sedum roofing option which did not use soil, and instead was installed on 25mm Rockwool insulation that was laid out.
The result at Kendal Town Hall:
We completed the roofing installation on 09/12/2021. The final result was received very positively, with the work meeting the criteria for a 20 year guarantee.
