About the project:
The original Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) building will undergo enhancements to align with the standards of the West Pavilion, as part of the East Estate Redevelopment project. From improved meeting facilities, to upgraded teaching spaces, and enhanced breakout and informal study areas, this refurbishment will bring a number of benefits. To ensure seamless access between the two areas, a new link corridor will connect the East Estate to the main entrance of the West Pavilion. At the centre of the School, a dedicated careers zone will be created, and the redevelopment plans also include an expanded PC lab, as well as a new café and staff lounge.
Our role in the project:
For this part of the project, our team here at Enviroply Roofing will be installing two new Bauder roofing systems for the new canopy roof, and link corridor, at the Lancaster University Management School.
For the new Link Corridor, we will begin by installing the Bauder Felt System, starting with the BauderTEC KSD FBS Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL). This is an elastomer bitumen AVCL that has a self-adhesive membrane, with the lap of this being equipped with a glass fleece to the underside. This allows the membrane to be sealed with a hot air welder. For this project, we will be using hot air tools to secure the AVCL into position, where this will prevent the build up of water vapour and condensation from causing erosion and damage to the rest of the roofing system.
Following the AVCL, we will then be installing the insulation layer, to prevent the loss of heat from the corridor in the winter months, and to prevent the property from gaining heat in the summer. For this project, we will be using the Bauder FA-TE Tapered Insulation Boards. These are rigid polyurethane foam boards that are faced on both sides with aluminium foil to maintain a high level of thermal efficiency and performance. They are also tapered to create the appropriate roofing gradient for correct and effective drainage.
Next, we will move onto the green roofing aspect of the development. For both the Canopy roof and the Link Corridor, we will start by installing the BauderTEC KSA DUO underlayer. This is a self adhesive option that offers effective lap sealing for maximum security and performance.
The BauderPLANT E Capping Sheet will be the next stage of the installation process. This is designed to resist the roots of the vegetation that will be applied in the final stage. This is an elastomer-bitumen torch on capping sheet that is reinforced with spunbond polyester to be more flexible, and to prevent cracking or damage from structural movement. As a result, this offers the perfect base for the green roofing membrane to be applied.
Finally, we will complete the green roofing system by installing the BauderGREEN SDF drainage and protection mat, and the BauderGREEN XF 301. The BauderGREEN SDF is made from a lightweight nylon loop mesh, between two layers of geotextile fleece, providing drainage, protection and a filtration layer for the BauderGREEN XF 301 sedum blanket. This is a lightweight sedum blanket system including integral moisture mat, that is designed for roof structures that require a minimal load, yet want to create a striking and vibrant green roofing system. As such, this is the perfect product combination for the development at Lancaster University Management School.
