About the project:

This development will see the iconic Talbot Mill transformed into 190 new homes, with an extensive green courtyard for residents to enjoy, and a 10-storey new build. A combination of one, two and three-bedroom apartments will be created as part of this development. Just a 15 minute walk from the centre of Manchester, and situated next to Cornbook tram stop, these homes will be in a highly desirable location.
As an important part of Manchester’s textile heritage, this mill is an important cultural and historic property, and the new development will be designed to respect this.

Our role in the project:

Here at Enviroply Roofing, we will be installing the Protan single ply roofing systems for the Talbot Mill development, including the 10-storey new build and the two mill refurbishments. This will involve a main roof system for each of the three residential blocks, as well as lower level roofing for all three too.
For the main roof for the two mill refurbishments, and the new build, we will be installing a Protan Standard Overlapping Roofing system. This will involve:
  • Installing the Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL)- For this part of the roofing project we will be installing the Protan Polyethylene vapour control membrane. This is an AVCL option that offers a high level of moisture protection, preventing water vapour and condensation from spreading through the roof structure. Its long lasting and durable performance make this the perfect option for the Talbot Mill development.
  • Installing the insulation layer- For this we will be installing the Polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation boards by Protan. These have a high level of thermal performance; preventing heat from being lost through the roof in winter, and preventing heat from being absorbed in the summer. This will keep the new homes in the Talbot Mill development at a comfortable temperature, and can reduce energy bills.
  • Installing the waterproofing membrane- We will complete the main roof systems for all three residential blocks with the installation of Protan SE. This is a reinforced, flexible PVC membrane with a textured, slip resistant surface, that can deliver exceptional performance for unmatched reliability and long lasting durability.
For the level 4 gutters on both of the mill residential blocks, we will be installing a Protan Ballast Roofing System. This will include a:
  • Lower protection layer- For this we will be installing the Protan F2B fleece which will provide protection for the substrate and upper layers of the roofing system.
  • Waterproof membrane- The Protan G1.8 will be installed on top of the lower protection layer. This is a glass fibre reinforced single ply membrane that is designed with durability in mind, making it the perfect option for usable roof surfaces. With a textured, slip resistant surface, this offers maximum security and safety.
  • Upper protection layer- Following this, the Protan F300M non-woven Polypropylene Fleece will be installed, before gravel or concrete paving is installed on top.
Finally, for the level 7 gutter on the new build block, we will install another Protan Ballast Roofing System. This will include an:
  • Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL)- For this roof, we will again use the Protan Polyethylene vapour control membrane.
  • Insulation- We will then install Polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation boards, approved by Protan.
  • Waterproof membrane- For this, the Protan G1.8 will again be installed.
  • Upper protection layer- Protan F300M non-woven Polypropylene Fleece will be installed to protect the roofing system, before gravel or concrete paving is installed on top.
